TRE® (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises) is a somatic-based practice designed to help release stress, tension, and trauma from the body. Rather than focusing on talking through past experiences, TRE works through the body by activating a natural tremor mechanism that may support nervous system regulation and recovery.

TRE was developed by Dr. David Berceli after years working in conflict zones and war-affected regions. During his time overseas, he noticed that when threats or explosions occurred, adults would often tighten and constrict their bodies, while younger children would naturally shake and tremor afterward.

This observation led Dr. Berceli to explore two key ideas:

  • Adults often suppress natural stress responses by bracing and holding tension in the body.
  • Children tend to shake, tremble, or cry after stressful events, potentially helping them process and release stress.

As adults, many of us learn to suppress these responses out of fear of appearing weak, sick, or different. Over time, that tension can accumulate within the body.

How TRE® Works

TRE consists of a series of simple exercises designed to activate specific muscle groups, particularly in the legs and hips. Once activated, the body may begin producing natural neurogenic tremors.

These tremors are not forced. Instead, they emerge naturally as part of the body's response to the exercises.

Many participants report:

  • Reduced physical tension
  • Improved relaxation
  • Better sleep quality
  • Increased resilience to stress
  • Greater presence and body awareness

More Than Trauma Recovery

While TRE was originally developed for individuals exposed to severe stress and trauma, it is now commonly used to support everyday nervous system regulation and overall well-being.

Today, TRE is practiced by veterans, first responders, professionals, athletes, and individuals seeking a body-based approach to managing stress.

One of the unique aspects of TRE is that it does not require revisiting or retelling difficult experiences. Instead, it focuses on supporting the body's natural capacity to regulate, recover, and restore balance.
